Two Team East Lothian athletes – Finn Middleton and Adam Hoole –had multi-event success at the FPSG scottishathletics National Combined Events Championships on 13th and 14th July 2019 at Grangemouth Stadium, Falkirk.
Adam Hoole competed in his first U17 Mens Decathlon over two days on the same weekend and took the Gold medal with 5408 points and a Championship Best Performance in the 100m sprint. The men’s decathlon includes 100m sprint, 100m hurdles, 400m, high jump, long jump, shot put, discus, javelin, pole vault and finishes with a 1500m run. Adam has been training in combined events for several years and has competed in pentathlons and heptathlons in the past. He was especially pleased with achieving personal best performances in discus, javelin and pole vault. Amusingly, the announcer pronounced his name as “Howl” throughout the event, and perhaps this nickname will stick!
Finn Middleton completed his first combined events competition, the U13 Boys Pentathlon, on Saturday 13th July and with an overall score of 1331 points, he came 5th in a highly competitive field of 14 athletes. This event consists of a 75m sprint, high jump, long jump, shot put and finishes with an 800m run. Finn did especially well in winning his 75m sprint heat and achieving personal best performances in four of the five events. His proud father says, “It was his first try and he thoroughly enjoyed it.”
Both athletes and their families would like to thank their coaches at Team East Lothian and Musselburgh Athletics as they all encourage, train and motivate them to achieve their best. Adam would also like to thank Kevin’s Pole Vault Squad for their support and expertise.
