Indoor Track & Field Champs – Feb 2024

Scottish Indoor Championships : Grangemouth

Grangemouth saw the finals of the National Indoor Championships on the 16-18th February and a healthy contingent of TEL athletes put in some great performances leading to medals, personal bests and season’s bests.

A fantastic gold medal went to Ben Anderson in the u15 long jump, winning the event by 4cm with a huge final jump and pb of 5.43m.

Multi-eventer Alister Mackay was again in action across both track and field, and scooped first place in the senior 60mH with a pb of 8.80s, second in the pole vault with 4.09m and second in the long jump with 6.65m.

Also in the medals was Beth Connolly who ran a fantastic pb of 8.98s in the women’s masters 60m final to secure a silver medal.

Matthew Connolly was 7th in the u15 LJ with 4.45m, Erin Hall 4th in the u20 women’s with 4.44m, whilst there were season’s best performances from Gemma Bolton running 9.05s in the women’s 60m and Kerry Morris who narrowly missed out on a medal in the women’s long jump with a season’s best 4.92m to secure fourth place. Kerry was also in action in the women’s 60m, qualifying for the final with a season’s best 8.16s in the heats and repeating the time in the final for fifth place

Well done to all our athletes and these performances undoubtedly bode well for an equally successful outdoor season.

UK Indoor Championships : Birmingham

Two TEL athletes made the trip to Birmingham on the 17th and 18th February having met the qualifying standards for the UK Indoor Championships.

Corey Campbell was back in Britain after his hugely successful indoor performances in the US. Showing no fear in amongst the ranks of senior athletes, Corey qualified for the 1500m final in 5th place from his heat in 3.47.26 and followed this up a day later with a very creditable 3.54.16 for 9th place in the final. Undoubtedly a great experience to take into future races, well done Corey!

At the other end of the track spectrum, multi-eventer Adam Hoole was up against the speed merchants in the 60m hurdles and was looking to dip under 8 seconds and perhaps bag a place in the final to repeat his feat of last year. In the event it wasn’t to be, and although he ran a pb and Scottish season’s best time of 8.05s, he missed the final by 0.04s.

British Universities and Colleges Championships : Sheffield

The weekend of the 23-25th February, saw TEL multi-eventers and training partners Adam and Alister swap their TEL purple and blue vests for university colours, as they competed for Heriot Watt and Strathclyde respectively, in the British Universities and Colleges Championships in Sheffield.

Both competed in the pole vault with Adam picking up a bronze medal with 4.63m, just failing to reach 4.73m and a new pb. Alister was rewarded with a new pb of 4.23m, with some close attempts at 4.33m

In the 60m hurdles Adam had two great runs to see him dip below the 8s mark for the first time, finishing the final in 5th place with 7.93s and 6th fastest all time Scottish senior.

In long jump qualification there were mixed fortunes, with Alister’s 6.43m unfortunately not enough for him to progress to the final. Adam’s 7.14m saw him qualify in third place and the following day’s final turned into an exciting competition with podium places changing almost every round. In the end a huge final round jump of 7.52m for Adam saw him take the title along with a 20cm pb and sixth all time jump in the Scottish senior rankings.
