It was the last event of the track season at the ON-X Athletics Stadium in Linwood on Saturday 11 September. Host club Kilbarchan AAC were joined by athletes from across Scotland for the Scottish Athletics Relay Championships. Runners took on the notoriously difficult challenge of running with, and passing, a baton smoothly round a 400m track.
Team East Lothian (TEL) had excellent representation at the event with runners across various age categories competing in the 4 x 100m, 4 x 400m and the 3 x 800m. It was an action-packed day, with the shorter distances requiring a qualification in a heat before progressing to the finals.
The Under 13 boys were first out of the blocks, with the 4 x 100m. There were twelve teams and two heats, with the first three from each heat qualifying automatically, along with the next two fastest teams. The Team East Lothian quartet of Donald Ross, Jake Page, Cridhe Maxwell and Howie Allison qualified with ease for the final, finishing 2nd in their heat. It was a fast run again in the final with the boys passing the baton smoothly between each runner and with 4th runner Howie Allison dipping for the line to sneak the team a shiny silver medal! Their time was 54.95s which got them a new TEL club record.
Also winning medals for their excellent performance were the Under 15 boys in the 3 x 800m relay, with the team comprising Innes Wright, Fraser Lupton and John Marshall. The format was two heats – which were timed finals, with the fastest across the heats winning the medals. The first heat was fast with the first team, Aberdeen AAC, crossing the line in 6m41.88s. The second heat wasn’t quite as fast with Dunfermline Track & Field finishing in 6m50.39s. After an anxious wait for results, it weas confirmed that Team East Lothian, however, were less than two seconds behind, finishing in 2nd place for that heat. And as they were faster than all other clubs in the first heat they won the bronze medal. There time was 6m52.26s which was also a new Team East Lothian record.
There were multiple Team East Lothian records broken on the day, which shows the high standard of running at the club. Each of the following events set new records for Team East Lothian.
Thomas Gornell, Jake Page and Howie Allison ran in the U13 boys 3 x 800m relay, and finished in 6th place, out of the 17 clubs that took part. Their time was 7m51.44.s
