There were lots of personal bests, a gold medal and a touch of heartbreak as the TEL multi-eventers arrived at the Emirates on the 8th and 9th of February 2025 for the Scottish Combined Events Championships, with the British CE title also up for grabs for the senior men.
Best performance of the weekend was undoubtedly Zak Fearn winning the Scottish U20 men’s heptathlon, with a new total PB of 4651 points and achieving 4 further PBs out of the seven events – LJ 6.41m, SP 10.35m, PV 3.67m and 1000m 2.47.51. Well done Zak,a fantastic performance!

Alister Mackay was top performer for the senior men with a final score of 5032,a new total points PB and agonisingly fourth place in the overall standings. Yet another very solid competition saw him gain an indoor LJ PB of 6.77m, shave a massive 0.17s off his 60mH to run 8.57s and also PB in the 1000m with 2.49.25.
There was a second CE heartbreak for Adam Hoole in 3 weeks, after no-heighting in the PV due to illness whilst leading the English senior CE champs, an incorrect pole selection meant that he crashed out of the event again with no height achieved, whilst leading the overall competition and with just the 1000m to run. As all combined eventers know, the competition is never over till it’s over!
In the younger age groups, the championships gave valuable experience in putting together a series of scores, often for the first time in a CE competition or in a new age group. Nina Millar in her first U13 girls pentathlon came 19th with 953 points including a new PB of 3.12.53 in the 800m. In the U15 girls pentathlon, Abi Campbell came 22nd with a total of 1689 points including three great PBs in the 60mH – 12.01s, HJ – 1.23m and LJ – 3.86m,whilst Kate Douglas came 25th in a new total points PB of 1491 and also including PBs in the 60mH – 12.71s and HJ – 1.20m. Meanwhile Thea Cooke in her first U17 women’s pentathlon came 20th with 1701 points including excellent new PBs in the HJ – 1.24m and SP – 5.84m
Well done everybody and shows the fantastic CE talent we have at all age groups within TEL.
